Chapter Seventeen

Selene never made it to the main house for dinner.

She stood in the middle of the workshop, blankly staring at the far wall while the afternoon shadows slowly progressed across the room.

Whatever creative spark that had possessed her was gone. It had fled, chased away by her mother’s visit like a hare running from a baying hound. It would be a while before such a delicate creature would venture forth again. Frustrated and mildly angry at her mother’s interference, Selene turned away from the wall just for a change in scenery.

Any spark, no matter how small, was a gift. Weak, flickering from lack of fuel, it still gave her hope. That was why she pushed herself, hoping that something would ignite inside her, something bright enough to guide her muse back to her. Her gaze dropped, passing over the rows of irregular bowls and other attempts to throw clay. If she ran her eyes along the shelves from right to left, she could follow her time spent in the workshop, the small improvements that didn’t satisfy her need for perfection…or for words. The clay kept her busy, but it wasn’t the same as writing. It wasn’t the art of language delicately drawn from the ether and turned into something that could evoke any emotion, deliver any message, and draw the reader into new worlds where they could assume the imaginary body of any character they desired.

Her vision shifted again, this time resting lower, to the place where Marion had placed Amy’s book. Such an unassuming item to evoke so much emotion. She could tell that her mother hadn’t wanted to leave it, her uncertainty clung to her like acrid smoke. Her indecision set off alarms in Selene’s skull that echoed along dusty halls full of closed doors that stubbornly remained locked against any attempt to open.

Still, something tickled at her brain, a beam of light escaping from beneath one of those doors that told her she had seen that specific book before. Marion said it was from Amy, which meant it most likely contained photos. Spotty memory and all, she couldn’t remember a time that Amy wasn’t attached to her camera, especially in high school…but for some reason she couldn’t bring herself to touch the thing. She doubted those pages were full of silly pictures of high school antics, there was something more to Amy’s gift. Memories of my life before, she thought, certain that was what sat between those pages. So why aren’t you rushing to open that Pandora’s box?

Fear, that was what it was. Why she was terrified of something she desired so much mystified her, but there it was, along with a sick sensation deep in her stomach that carried with it the acid taste of regret.

Somewhere, on the wind or in her mind, a woman laughed and whispered something she could almost hear. It almost sounded like hope, but that could just be wishful thinking. Selene held little stock in hope anymore. Hope was one of those things you couldn’t grasp in your hand and shape it into something you want.
